Talking about jobs and occupations | ESL/EFL Lesson Plan

Length of the lesson: 40 minutes
Topic: Jobs and occupations
Tasks: Talk about jobs and occupations
Language focus: jobs and occupations
Review: Talk about your family

Lead-in (7 minutes)

Teacher talks about his family then asks students questions about their families (Example: How many people are there in your family? How old are they? etc.)
Teacher asks students to come to the board and write as many jobs/occupations they know (translation might be useful for some of the students).

Presentation – Teacher reads, students listen (5 minutes)

My name is Nam and I am 39 years old. I am an engineer and I live with my family in Ho Chi Minh City. My wife is a teacher and she is 38 years old. She teaches Geography. My son is 13 years old and he is a student. He wants to be a doctor.

Practice (5 minutes)

Before going further the teacher might want to go through the pronunciation of the job/occupation words written by students on the board.

Answer the questions (3 minutes)

How many people are there in Nam’s family? Who are they?
What does Nam do?
How old is Nam’s wife?
What does Nam’s wife do?
How old is Nam’s son?
What does Nam’s son do?
What does he want to be in the future?

Production (10 minutes)

Students work in pairs. Ask your partner the following questions and write the answers in the notebook:
How many people are there in your family?
What does your father do?
What does your mother do?
What does your sister/brother do?
What does your sister/brother want to be in the future?
What do you want to be in the future?

Speaking (10 minutes)

Share with the class the information about the occupations/jobs of your partner’s family members.
