My school | Describe your school | ESL/EFL Lesson Plan

The purpose of the lesson: Describe your school using “There is/are ...” and forming questions using “How many ... are there in ...?”
Student’s level: Elementary
Class size: 40 students
Age: 11-12 years old
Lesson length: 40 minutes

Asking questions and giving answers using “there is/are ...” is not very easy for Vietnamese learners of English. The question “How many rooms are there in your house?” translated from Vietnamese into English is “Your house has rooms how many?” Interesting!

Personally, I will start the lesson with the below picture projected on the blackboard.

Stage 1

What is this? (point the building, point the classroom, point a floor)
What are they? (pointing the students) Draw some human shapes on the board that represent the students. Circle the students that are drawn on the board and write a number that represents the number of the students in the classroom.
The teacher tags the items that have just been asked (work on pronunciation by drilling with the whole class).

Stage 2 – Questioning

Example:
How many students are there in class 6A?

I expect the students to understand the question and answer me shortly: 40.

The teacher writes the question on the board and underlines “how many” and “are there”. The teacher points out that if the question contains “are there” then the answer should contain “there are”.

Example:
How many students are there in class 6A?
There are 40 students in class 6A.

How many classrooms are there in the school?
There are four classrooms in the school.

How many classrooms are there on the first floor?
There are 2 classrooms on the first floor.

How many floors does your school have?
My school has one floor.

Which grade are you in?
I am in grade 6.

Which class are you in?
I am in class 6A1.

Where is your classroom?
My classroom is on the first floor.

Stage 3 – Practicing questions and answers

In pairs students practice the questions and the answers.

Stage 4

Individual, the students draw an imaginary school that has a different number of classrooms, floors etc, then in pairs ask and answer the questions.
