Feedback activities in ESL/EFL classroom

Here are nine great feedback activities that you can do in the classroom with your students. These activities can be adapted for a particular situation to fit your and your students’ needs.

Tic Tac Toe – For gap-fills/comprehension questions

Use this ESL/EFL activity for ten or more questions. There should be two teams which must agree on their answers.

Discussion groups – For any questions

As students finish an exercise they move to a section of the room and check their answers, there can be two.

“What did you get for number ...?” – For any questions

Use this ESL/EFL activity when whole class checking answers. Students ask each other “What did you get for ...?”

Half and half – For gap-fills/comprehension questions

Use this ESL/EFL activity for any number of questions. Put students in pairs, give student A half the answer and student B the other half. They check their own answers and then get the rest from their partner.

Jumbled answers – For gap-fills/comprehension questions

Use this ESL/EFL activity for any number of questions. Give students the answers in a different order for them to match them up.

5, 10, 20 – For gap-fills/Comprehension questions

Use this ESL/EFL activity for any number of questions. Form three teams which must agree on their answers. Teams can get 5, 10, or 20 points for getting the correct answer.

Grammar gamble – For error correction

Use this ESL/EFL activity with two or three groups. Students gamble on whether they can correct the errors.

How many wrong? – For true/false questions

This ESL/EFL activity might be done based or a reading or listening text. Teacher tells students how many are wrong but not which ones are wrong.

Cross the floor – For true/false questions

This ESL/EFL activity might be done based or a reading or listening text. Students stand one side of the room (true side or false side) and try to persuade the other side to join them by justifying their answer.
